In this presentation, Professor Bowersock will speak on the emergence and interrelated fates of Rome, Constantinople and Moscow. Rome became the capital of a great Mediterranean empire, which tried through myth and mystique to reconcile its legendary Trojan origins with its presence in Italy. As Roman power grew, the city's name became synonymous with the center of imperial government and, as Christianity grew, of ecclesiastical authority too. But when Constantine transferred the imperial capital to Byzantium and re-named the city after himself, Constantinople became a new or second Rome. For many centuries, this eastern Rome was both the capital of the Byzantine empire and the center of orthodox Christianity. It succumbed to the Ottoman Turks in 1453, and the Russians, who had accepted Christianity from the Byzantine Greeks, could then claim that Moscow had become the Third Rome. Professor Bowersock will discuss the implications of the triadic concept, and the lessons it has to teach us about our past and our present.

long as you hold that position, be mindful always of God. Fear God who
has bestowed so much on you. Do not rely on gold, wealth, or glory! All
of that is collected here and it will remain here on earth. Tsar!
Remember the Blissful who held the sceptre in His hand and the imperial
crown on His head and said: "Do not turn your heart to wealth that is
running away from you." The wise Solomon said: "Wealth and gold are
valued not when they are hidden, but when people offer help to those in
need"...... Tsar! During your rule remember [an additional] two
commandments.... [The first is]: Do not violate the order which was
chosen by your great predecessor [emperor] Constantine, the beatific
Vladimir, the great and God-selected laroslav, and all other blissful

not expropriate] that which has been given to God in return for eternal

Council issued a very strict injunction [against such action]....
Now I beg
you and beg you again, please remember what I have said. For God's sake,
please also remember that now all [Orthodox] Christian kingdoms have
merged into your tsardom. Henceforth we can expect only one kingdom to
come. That kingdom is eternal. I have written this because, admiring you
as I do, I have appealed and have prayed to God that He may bless you.
Change your stinginess to generosity and your inclemency to kindness.
Comfort those who cry and moan day and night. Protect the innocent from
their tormentors. I repeat here what I have written above. Pious Tsar!
Listen and remember that all Christian kingdoms have now merged into

Foreword
From an Orthodox point of view, Old Rome fell when it
lost the Orthodox Faith and cut itself off from the Church in the
eleventh century. The Second Rome, Constantinople, fell when it was
conquered by Muslims in the fifteenth century. As for the Third Rome,
Moscow, it fell to militant ‘humanist’ atheism in 1917. However, such
simple notions need closer examination, for they conceal greater truths
from which we can still learn for our benefit. These truths are all
concerned with the question ‘Why?’
Why did the
First Rome fall?
Old Rome fell, because it saw in itself the
continuation of the old pagan Roman Empire, the leaders of its Church
substituting themselves for the old pagan Roman Emperors, who had
claimed universal jurisdiction. This imperialism was taken up by
newly-converted Germanic peoples and imposed ideologically through the
teaching of the filioque. This was a doctrinal heresy, added to the
Creed of the Universal Church, which made the Popes of Rome substitutes
for Christ, from Whom, according to their novel doctrine, proceeded the
Spirit of Truth and all authority. Thus, arrogant Germanic nationalism,
added to historic Roman narcissism, caused the Schism of the West, which
ripened and fell from the Tree of the Church in the eleventh century.
The new faith was called ‘Roman Catholicism’, a contradiction in terms,
for something merely local, ‘Roman’, cannot in its local form also be
universal, or ‘catholic’. The essence of the fall was imperial
‘Romanism’, what can be called doctrinal nationalism (1).
Why did the
Second Rome fall?
New Rome, Constantinople, came soon after its
foundation to be dominated by Greek culture and language. Again and
again, the political centralism of the Greek-speaking Emperors and
Empresses in Constantinople led them into both heresy and brutality,
especially in the form of blinding its enemies. The imposition of this
centralism led to the alienation of other races. Thus, Persian Orthodox
were led to fall into Nestorianism, which spread to Afghanistan and
China, meaning that the first Christians there were not Orthodox. In
turn, Armenians, Copts and Syrians fell into Monophysitism, not
necessarily because they were Monophysites, but because of their sense
of outraged nationalism.
The fact that the Greek elite of Constantinople had
already alienated these peoples only encouraged the spread of Islam. The
fact they also showed such contempt for the ‘barbarian’ Western peoples
did nothing to prevent their fall into heresy. Even Orthodox Bulgarians
and Serbs at times rose up against the imperialistic injustices of
Constantinople. The racism, or ‘phyletism’ of the Greek cultural elite,
who even called other Orthodox ‘barbarians’ (2), led to their
willingness to compromise the Orthodox Faith at the Council of Florence
in 1439 and become Uniats. Any sacrifice could be made, provided that
the elite could keep its racial heritage. The result was that very
swiftly the Second Rome fell to the Muslims, the Lord allowing the
Empire to be taken away. The essence of the fall was something that the
Apostle Paul condemned, Hellenism, what can be called ‘ethnic
nationalism’.
Why did the Third Rome fall?
After the
fall of the Second Rome, there remained only one source of power in the
Orthodox Commonwealth and that was in Moscow. With the First Rome fallen
into doctrinal error, the Second fallen to the ‘Hagarenes’ after
compromising the Orthodox Faith, responsibility for Orthodoxy fell to
Moscow. However, this responsibility soon became mingled with
nationalism. Tragically, those who had a broader vision of the Orthodox
world, like Patriarch Nikon in the seventeenth century, were deposed and
from 1700 on the Russian Church found itself controlled by a Department
of State on the Protestant model. The aim was to reduce Orthodoxy to a
mere national ritualism of outward observance.
Then the
understanding of the Church Fathers was submerged beneath the knowledge
of German philosophy and Western technology, which together formed the
bedrock of the new centralizing Russian national chauvinism and its
imposition of Muscovite language, culture and customs, even in ancient
Orthodox lands and regions like Georgia, Belarus, Galicia and other
border areas. This inevitably led to the fall of 1917. Soviet Communism
preached the supremacy of Russia withoutOrthodoxy, replacing the
Third Rome by the Third International. It replaced icon banners with
portraits of its demons and in the centre of the Third Rome enshrined
the ‘relics’ of its 'immortal' founder, Lenin. His forename, Vladimir,
meaning ‘the ruler of the world’, echoed that of St Vladimir, who had
baptized Russia nearly a thousand years before.
At that
time, millions of Russian Orthodox were massacred by other Russian
‘Orthodox’. The difference was that the former were practising Orthodox,
the latter were apostates and had quite lost their Faith. The symbol of
them was Stalin, the apostate Orthodox seminarian, who became probably
the greatest mass murderer in all human history. The problem was that
the Orthodox Faith had for them been reduced to a mere external rite or
ideology, for which an easier ideology, promising paradise on earth without
God, could be substituted. The Communists behaved like Orthodox,
but without Christ, i.e. anti-Orthodox. And that is what they were,
Christless, and so devilful. The essence of the fall was externalism,
what can be called ‘ritual nationalism’.
The Third
Rome and the Future
It may be argued that there is one vital difference
between the first Two Romes and the Third. The First has not repented,
but persists in its errors. The Second is still occupied, partly due to
its ever-willingness to compromise the Faith, as we have again recently
seen in Istanbul. The Third, however, is in the process of repenting.
What truth is there in this argument?
True,
Communism fell fifteen years ago. However, the scars which Communism
left are everywhere clearly visible. Everywhere, alcoholism from the
dread Polish vodka, everywhere, sexually transmitted diseases and
abortion, everywhere, ecological catastrophe, everywhere, crime,
injustice and intimidation, everywhere, the rule of the Mafia (3). It
took seventy-five years for Communism to fail so utterly. It may take
seventy-five years for repentance for Orthodoxy to work so utterly.
Today, over 27,000 churches are open in Russia - a miracle when compared
to the 6,000 churches open fifteen years ago. But we shall only be
assured of popular repentance, when there are 100,000 churches open in
Russia. There is still so far to go. We are only just beginning.
Afterword
Thus,
human-beings have compromised the Faith brought by the Son of God, with
three sorts of nationalism. Firstly, they corrupted the teachings of the
Church, directly contradicting the words of Christ in the Gospel, that
the Spirit proceeds from the Father (Jn. 15, 26). This was doctrinal
nationalism. Then they sold their Faith for the mess of pottage of
their race. This was ethnic nationalism. Then they substituted
mere external ritual for the Faith. This was ritual nationalism.
And yet by virtue of the repentance and sacrifice of the New Martyrs and
Confessors, the Third Rome has, miraculously, been allowed to rise
again. Crucifixion is followed by Resurrection. However, this rising
again is only for a time. Here, there is a stark warning. If Russia
makes her Orthodoxy once more into a mere national ritual, she will lose
it again, and this time for ever.
All the best elements in Russia’s history worked not
nationally, but internationally. They understood that Russia’s
responsibility was multinational and multilingual. Whether it was the
wonderful mix of Russian, Bulgarian, Greek, Syrian, Hungarian, Serbian
and others in Kievan Russia, St Anthony and St Macarius the Romans
living the ascetic life in Russia’s forests, whether it was St Stephen
of Perm converting the Zyrians, St Solomonia the Tartar, Patriarch
Nikon, ‘Russian, but whose faith and religion are Greek’, with his
international Monastery at New Jerusalem outside Moscow, whether it was
St Herman of Alaska, converting Inuit and Eskimo, St Nicholas of Tokyo,
converting the Japanese, or St John of Shanghai, celebrating in Greek,
Chinese, Dutch, French or English, they all understood that Orthodoxy is
not a national cult, but a Commonwealth, of which God has put Russia in
charge, and that if Russia is not worthy of that charge, it will be
taken away from her.
Thus, when contemporary Russia builds and opens new
churches in China, Iceland, Korea, Italy, Vietnam, Holland, South
America, India and Cuba, and translates the Gospel and the catechism
into many languages, from Chinese to those of Siberian peoples, she does
well. But she must also realize that her responsibilities are not only
to her own ethnic peoples, but to World Orthodoxy. Local Orthodoxy can
quickly sour into a narrow chauvinism, if it is not combined with love
of the Orthodox Commonwealth. May the New Russia learn from the errors
and betrayals of the First and Second Romes, but may she also learn from
the errors of the Third Rome. The Orthodox Christian Faith cannot be
reduced to a mere ritual or language, for what is important is its inner
content. Let us hear much less about ‘The Third Rome’, and much more
about ‘Holy Russia’, which is the defining essence of the spiritual
meaning of Russia. For it is to the example of Holy Russia, and to no
other, that we must all turn and repent.

Imperialisms
and the Three Romes
Introduction: Secular Imperialisms
Imperialism
is in fact a form of idolatry, more precisely national idolatry, the
personality cult of the nation. Like all attachments to human
organisations, imperialisms are secular in nature, even if sometimes
they may be camouflaged in religious guise. And because they are
secular, they are often evil. In any case, imperialisms make the
countries infected by them disliked and even hated.
Thus, there
is today’s American imperialism, Pax Americana, with its legions
bankruptingly sent out to defend its many bases all over the world. It
leads to hate-filled American flag-burning from Iraq to Afghanistan,
from Iran to Cuba, from Venezuela to Saudi Arabia, from North Korea to
Vietnam, and the list goes on. Its predecessor, British imperialism, Pax
Britannica, also means that the words Britain and British are hated in
Ireland, in parts of Scotland, in large parts of Africa, the Middle East
and on the Indian subcontinent.
Similarly,
Spain and Portugal earned themselves hatred for their imperialism in
Latin America, French imperialism brought hatred for France, especially
in North Africa and Vietnam. Austro-Hungarian imperialism brought hatred
in Central and Eastern Europe, Belgian Imperialism brought hatred in
the Belgian Congo, the Netherlands won hatred in the East Indies and
Italian Imperialism won hatred for Italy in Libya and Ethiopia. As for
Germany, its two European Wars brought it hatred all over Europe and
even today, in Greece, Spain, Ireland and other countries, Germany’s
economic domination of the EU earns it the name of ‘The Fourth Reich’
and demonstrators against it appear on the streets of Europe.
‘Christian’
Imperialisms
However, further back in history, long before the
‘Enlightenment’ (by neo-paganism) and the ‘Renaissance’ (of
neo-paganism), which gave birth to the arrogance of modern imperialisms,
there were ancient imperialisms. Apart from pre-Christian and
Non-Christian forms, these include imperialisms brought by the secular
into the Christian Church, which attempted to Christianise them – not
always successfully.
Thus, in Christian life, Roman Imperialism (a vestige
from paganism, though later theologically justified by the barbarian
‘Emperor’ Charlemagne with the indefensible and unBiblical ‘filioque’
doctrine) brought Roman Catholicism into doctrinal and therefore visible
and practical compromise. It also brought it undying resistance from
the rest of the Christian world. Its crimes, atrocities and massacres,
many of them very recent, all stemming from the pagan claims of the Pope
of Rome to universal domination, will never be forgotten by the
Orthodox, Protestant and secular worlds.
Thus, a
victim of barbarianism, the First Rome fell and the Second Rome of
Constantinople took its place. A victim of Imperialist nationalism,
‘Hellenism’, condemned by the Apostle Paul and alienating Copts,
Semites, Latins and other races, that Empire also fell, though the
Church remained doctrinally uncompromised. In its turn it was replaced
by the Third Rome in Moscow. And that Empire also fell, a victim of its
own imperialism, but again the Church remained doctrinally
uncompromised.
The Imperialism of the First and Second Romes
Within the
Roman Catholic world, the Imperialistic ideology of the First Rome lives
on and is aggressively pursued for want of any viable justification for
its existence.
However, the second imperialism also lives on, on the
fringes of the Greek Orthodox Church. Megalomania, the unreal fantasy
for a diminished Second Rome that disappeared 568 years ago, continues.
It pursues its unrealistic, colonialist illusions, for example, in
Alexandria and Jerusalem, colonial outposts of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs in Athens. This imperialism is all the more absurd, in that it
is uni-national.
Currently, for instance, the Patriarchate of
Constantinople is revoking the autonomy given to parishes in Great
Britain which call themselves ‘of the Russian Tradition’ (i. e. those
under the Rue Daru jurisdiction in Paris). They now have to go directly
under the jurisdiction of the local Greek Archbishop. Presumably,
Constantinople will later cast adrift the rest of the parishes on the
Continent which are still under the jurisdiction of its ailing last
bishop, Archbishop Gabriel. It already did this between 1966 and 1971,
and tried again in the 1980s, when its true intention of hellenisation
at last became clear to me, then a deacon in Paris. Having experienced
the appalling behaviour of Moscow, I had naively thought that
Constantinople could behave better.
I can
remember in the 1980s how the fear of being cast adrift by
Constantinople was the haunting nightmare of its then Archbishop George
(Wagner). Indeed, Patriarch Demetrios of Constantinople said at the time
that his parishes would indeed have to return to the Russian Church one
day, a statement recently repeated by Archim. Placide Deseille. In the
early 80s, the Rue Daru group was forbidden to expand its jurisdiction
by taking in a former OCA priest in England, who had fallen out with
both branches of the Russian Church here. Constantinople’s policy at the
time was to remove parishes from the Rue Daru jurisdiction one by one,
country by country, and place them directly under its Greek bishops.
Its policy
now seems to be to let the last bishop die and so, bishopless, Rue Daru
will have to be ‘athenagorised’, or else to die out altogether. The
Patriarchate of Constantinople also seems to have backed out of
ambitions in the Ukraine and perhaps Estonia. It may also give up its
jurisdiction over Ukrainian parishes in the Diaspora. Presumably, all
this is in exchange for Russian financial and diplomatic support with
the Turkish government and Constantinople’s struggle to reopen its
seminary there. There is also the threatening fact that more Russian
Orthodox live in Turkey (15,000) than Greek Orthodox (800). Another
bargaining counter would be the Russian abandonment of the uncanonical
Cold War period autocephaly, embarrassingly given by the Soviet-period
Russian Church to a group of parishes in North America and known as the
OCA.
Locally, we too have suffered from the empire-building
of a tiny new calendarist group, sponsored by the Patriarchate of
Constantinople. Some years ago it set itself up on our doorstep and
tried to steal both our parishioners and even our music. All this
attempted destruction under the pretext of the ‘Pan-Orthodox’ myth, was
directed from a military-style map with its drawing-pins.
The
Imperialism of the Third Rome
The Third
Rome Imperialism of Moscow has been less nationalistic and in some ways
more justified than that of the Second Rome. This is for the simple
reason that the Russian Empire (most of which now forms the Russian
Federation) has always been huge (varying between one seventh and one
ninth of the planet). It has also always been multinational, with over
100 nationalities and languages), unlike the Second Rome, which rapidly
became narrowly Greek. (I still remember a well-known Cypriot priest and
reputed ‘elder’ assuring me 35 years ago how Plato had been Orthodox
and that God spoke Greek by preference!).
As a result
of its size and variety, the Russian Orthodox Church is less centralised
than the Patriarchate of Constantinople. She is made up of a
Confederation of autonomous Metropolias and Churches, such as the
Ukrainian, Belarussian, Moldovan, Latvian, Kazakhstan, Japanese and
Chinese Orthodox Churches and the Church Outside Russia (ROCOR). (This
does not include the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches of Poland and the
Czech Lands and Slovakia, which in the unspoken reality are also former
parts of the Russian Orthodox Church).
However,
Russian imperialism still won it many enemies, especially in the
Caucasus, the far western Ukraine, Finland and in much of Eastern Europe
(Is not Poland the Russian Ireland?) This Russophobia was much
reinforced by later Soviet imperialist crimes. The Russian Orthodox
antidote to the Third Rome imperialism of the Russian State and its
provincial (‘Old Ritualist’) obscurantist nationalism, the construction
of the New Jerusalem, was stopped. This came about with the beheading of
the Church and the imprisonment of her rightful Patriarch Nikon in the
second half of the seventeenth century. Thus, his New Jerusalem complex
was not finished until now. This beheading of the Russian Church was
achieved by Roman Catholic intriguing, Greek venality and Russian
ignorance - three imperialisms conniving together.
After the
Russian Revolution of 1917, plotted and greeted by the Western Powers,
the Orthodox world fell into chaos. British imperialism began picking at
the soft underbelly of the Orthodox world in the Middle and Near East,
Greece, Cyprus and even Romania, introducing freemasonry, the ‘new
calendar’ and other divisive modernist reforms. They thought that the
invention of a ‘Diet Orthodoxy’, an ‘Orthodoxy Lite,’ would be enough to
degut, divide by schism and so rule over those Local Churches. Often it
used puppet German princelings the Western Powers had placed in the
Balkans or else Anglicanism, as its weapon to divide and rule, making
especial use of Arab Orthodox bishops acting uncanonically and, on the
other hand, the zeal without knowledge of the outraged uneducated.
With the
collapse of British imperialism after 1945, American imperialism took up
the ignoble task, working to crush the last vestiges of spiritual
resistance to its materialist idolatry, its ultimate aim to destroy
every trace of spiritual life in the Greek Orthodox world. However, more
recently, it has turned its attention to destroying Serbian, Ukrainian
and Georgian Orthodoxy, particularly humiliating the Serbian Church in
recent months. The EU has now also taken up satan’s cause, infiltrating
the Local Churches in Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus in particular, and
working against Serbia too, using its traditional divide and rule
method, in order to create an EU-friendly and politically correct
pseudo-Orthodoxy, softened up by papal visits.
During the
Cold War period, not so long ago, and the appalling moral decadence in
parts of the Patriarchal Russian Church in the Diaspora at that time,
the KGB only appointed the compromised to positions of responsibility.
Thus, it could hold power of them (‘every man has his price’). It also
encouraged the personality cults which were so divisive in the Russian
Church. Thus, many faithful and clergy fled it for other jurisdictions
in the freedom of the Diaspora, though many of them, especially in
ROCOR, remained most loyal to the Russian Tradition. Although this has
all changed today, we have not forgotten and the wounds are still raw.
Many lives were ruined by the Cold War and, sadly ‘distrust’ is still
the word which best sums up attitudes to the Patriarchal Russian Church
in the Diaspora. Apologies, though decades late, would greatly help.
But what of
the Patriarchal Russian Church inside Russia in all this today? To the
intense irritation of the US/EU duo, She has revived through the blood
of the New Martyrs and the tears of the New Confessors since the fall of
Western-imposed Communism. At present the West is hoping that the
suicidal and self-imposed mixture of ecological catastrophe, financial
corruption (also among the Church elite), abortion and alcoholism will
be enough. If Russians want to commit suicide in any of these four ways,
it can only be to the benefit of the US/EU power in its so-called
‘secret’ project to install Antichrist in Jerusalem.
Conclusion:
Solutions?
Those who are being cast adrift by the Patriarchate of
Constantinople today can always return to the Russian Church, either
directly to the Patriarchal part or else to the autonomous ROCOR, which
now has the most open and understanding Metropolitan in its history.
They will be welcomed back. We too suffered before you and understand
you. Although you were unable through naivety and inexperience to listen
to the warnings which we gave at the time, warnings learned from our
own sorry experience, we are still open to you. We must not condemn
ourselves never to learn from history.
There are
those who, like ourselves, have for decades wanted to see and have
worked for an autonomous Orthodox Metropolia for Western Europe, as the
basis one day, if God wills, for a local European Orthodox Church. Only
this can witness to Christ in the compromised and dying heterodox world.
And the fact is that there is only one Church which can establish this
Metropolia and has publicly announced its intention to do so. This is
the Russian Orthodox Church. Despite Third Rome imperialism,
increasingly balanced by the restoration of the New Jerusalem outside
Moscow and the re-establishment of the seventeenth century multinational
ideal of the Russian Orthodox Church, this Metropolia is viable and is
coming.
Cynics may doubt this, given some of the individuals
involved, but cynics should remember three things. Firstly, this
Metropolia is real - it is not just another uncanonical disincarnate
fantasy of Parisian philosophy. Secondly, it is the only offer on the
table, for the Patriarchate of Constantinople has never freely granted
anyone autonomy, let alone autocephaly, as Dr Basil Osborne told me some
35 years ago. The recent history of the Church of Bulgaria proves this.
Finally, cynics should remember that the Church is not governed by men,
but by God. It belongs to Him, His Body, not to us. It is God’s Will
that we are trying to do, not our own. The recent history of the Russian
Church and its miraculous resurrection after the Soviet Golgotha proves
this.
To those who seek a safe haven and the uncompromised
Orthodox Tradition, we would say: Don’t miss the train. And remember
that although man proposes, it is God Who disposes.

The New York Times, by Jane Perlez - KUWAIT CITY, April 7 2003 — American forces took control of a major presidential palace on the banks of the Tigris River in Baghdad early this morning in the strongest coalition thrust yet into the city. Explosions thundered and thick smoke covered portions of Baghdad as the Americans entered the city center in the early hours. As many as 70 tanks and 60 Bradley fighting vehicles rolled down the wide streets as A-10 Thunderbolt planes, nicknamed the Warthog, and pilotless drones flew over Baghdad unchallenged. There were reports of heavy machine fire and mortars during fighting around the presidential compound. American commanders on the ground said that three army battalions would stay in the city center, and not leave as happened in an initial lighter raid on Saturday. Two American soldiers and two journalists — one Spanish and the other German — were killed and 15 people were wounded today in an Iraqi attack on a tactical operations center established by the Third Infantry Division, Second Brigade on the outskirts of Baghdad. "Some sort of a rocket hit near the Second Brigade's tactical operation center south of the city," Major Michael Birmingham, chief public affairs officer for the Third Infantry, told Reuters. Elsewhere, British commanders told reporters traveling with them in Basra that they had found the body of Ali Hassan al-Majid a cousin of Saddam Hussein known as "Chemical Ali." Mr. Majid, who the United States says ordered a poison gas attack which killed thousands of Kurds in 1988, is commander of Iraq's southern front and his death would be interpreted by the people of Basra as a sign that the regime was close to collapse. The British defense secretary, Geoff Hoon, said in London that the ministry had strong indications that Mr. Majid was dead. At the daily briefing at Central Command in Doha, Qatar, Brig. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, said that the Iraqis had blown up one of Baghdad's major bridges. He also said that there were pockets of resistance in the Baghdad area. "What we don't see is an overarching structure that can order action from north to south and east to west, throughout the country. Only the coalition has that capability right now," General Brooks said. `And as each day passes, there's less and less that the regime can do to order action by their forces.` In an effort to discourage too much confidence too soon among the British public, Mr. Hoon described the progress of the war as a mixed picture outside the cities of Baghdad and Basra. The results so far, he said, were not as good in some areas as the coalition forces had hoped. This was an apparent reference to instability in towns in the south that the Americans passed by on the way to Baghdad. Mr. Hoon said that military officials estimated the operating ability of the elite Republican Guard at 50 percent. In Baghdad, however, American officers appeared pleased with the gains today. Aside from the major palace on the river bank, American soldiers had captured another palace in the city center belonging to Saddam Hussein, they said. "There are two palaces, we own both of them," Lt. Col. Peter Bayer, operations officer for the Third Infantry Division, told reporters traveling with the troops. At one of the palaces, half a dozen Syrian soldiers were found, one of them hiding in a refrigerator, military officials said. The Republican Guards responsible for the security of the palace had fled. The Americans were also reported to have toppled a statue of Saddam Hussein astride a horse. A spokesman at Central Command headquarters described the morning's efforts in Baghdad as an armored raid through the city bringing down resistance and attacking leadership capabilities. At the Pentagon, a spokesman cautioned that today's raids should not be interpreted as the battle for Baghdad but rather as a message that the Americans could come and go as they choose. In Qatar, General Brooks said: `The commanders on the ground will make the decisions on what parts of Baghdad they wish to retain control of." he defiant Iraqi information minister, Mohammed Saeed Sahaf, denied that Baghdad's defenders had lost ground. But this morning, he was forced to appear on the streets, talking to reporters in the open air instead of the usual briefing room. The city was strong, fortified and safe, he said, a short time after the American warplanes had flown overhead and clouds of smoke obliterated the skyline. American officers had said earlier that their forces surrounded the Information Ministry and the Rashid Hotel, but it was not clear later in the day whether those forces had stayed or had entered the facilities. As an illustration of how the Iraqi government had lost its grip, Gen. Brooks said workers at the airport outside Baghdad had helped American soldiers turn on the electricity, and showed them around the complex. In Basra, the second city of Iraq, British forces strengthened their control by pushing in to the narrow alleys of the old part of town. Iraqi fighters were believed to be holding out in the warren of streets where the thoroughfares are too narrow for the coalitions armored vehicles. It appeared that British soldiers could have to flush out the Iraqis in the old city by fighting on foot. But in a show of control of the population of just over 1 million, about 400 British and American troops, guarded by tanks and helicopter gunships, walked unopposed almost to the city center this morning. The soldiers had taken off their helmets and chemical warfare gear. Residents, including women and children who have been more reluctant to emerge, came out and smiled at the passing troops. Some of the residents asked for water. Earlier, British troops easily took an elaborate presidential palace in Basra belonging to Mr. Hussein. British soldiers met no resistance there, and inside found an immaculate residence decorated with polished marble, mosaic tiles and fretted woodwork. In the northern city of Mosul, coalition airstrikes continued their bombardment on military targets, particularly ammunition dumps.
April 4, 2003 - Salina, Kansas Before I get into our 4-hour fellowship with Michael, a professor in philosophy at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas, I'd like to answer a letter from one of our brothers, which we met along the way-I think this will be helpful and it will address a number of his concerns, as well as yours. Actually, the correspondence was addressed to Dene, but, since Dene was not in that meeting, and I was, I think that my answers will be much more realistic than Dene's, in that Dene simply was not there in Winston-Salem for the "give and take" of the conversation and atmosphere - so here goes: Dear Jay - I would like to answer your letter as an "open letter" to our subscribers because it will accomplish several things: (1) Give me an opportunity to share with you the answers to your questions-yet maintain a modicum of privacy, and . . . (2) Give me an opportunity to express how I feel to everyone out there - both our subscribers, and many individuals who will be "hitting" on our site throughout the world. Dear Dene, I would like to try to summarize my impressions on this eve of war. I do so with CNN faintly flooding the background with its many words. On Friday evening I met with Steve, and Doug and a number of other saints in Clemmons, NC. In summary, I would describe their focus as a call to, "come out of Babylon". Babylon, the, "apostate church", as reflected in the evangelical constituency of George Bush. (They made a very good case.) As I understood them, the apostate church is riding the back of the beast which is the "American New World Order System". In our sharing, of course, we present what we call: THE TALE OF TWO CITIES. Steve presents the "Big Picture" of God's eternal purpose and plan - i.e., that God's original intent and purpose is to build up His City, the Holy and New Jerusalem - wherein He has effectively done, and is doing so, by working with Israel from Abraham until the time of Christ (approximately 2,000 years); and then, seemingly, He has placed Israel aside for the past 2,000 years to work on the Church (from the time of Christ until today). Both Israel and the Church constitute the New Jerusalem, prepared as a Bride descending out of heaven prepared for the Lamb. There are a multitude of Scriptures, which at each of our gatherings, we will read in order to substantiate this thesis. Also, the antithesis of the New/Holy Jerusalem (i.e., that which is being built by God and is called the "Bride" in the Revelation) is Satan's counterfeit City: Babylon the Great. This City, as well as its administration and development, actually commences from the fall of humankind (wherein man's attempt at deification ("you shall be as God, knowing good and evil"), by partaking of the forbidden fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, commenced Satan's strategy to build the Great City, Babylon. However, in actuality, after the flood, the first "expression" of such a Great City was the founding of "civilization" on the Plains of Shinar, and the building of the Tower of Babel under Nimrod. From here, although there as a "confounding" of languages and a disbursement of false unity under Nimrod by divine intervention, the concept of "Babylon the Great" continued through civilization's ever-increasing march through history until we reach the Kingdom of Babylon under King Nebuchadnezzar. The CONCEPT of Babylon the Great, the counterfeit city, the antithesis of the New and Holy Jerusalem, is the ever-expanding march of the Biblical, and ultimately, the DOMINANT civilization of the world. This concept was outlined in King Nebuchadnezzar's dream, which was interpreted by Daniel the prophet. The dream was that of an IMAGE of a man wherein different metals and parts of the body of the image are singled out as EXPANSIONS of that ever-increasing civilization.
