MY soul doth magnify the Lord:

BLESSED be the Lord God of Israel, because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people: And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant:

Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us:
To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament,

While the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, “Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him.” Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, “Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out.” But the wise answered, saying, “No; lest there should not be enough for us and you: but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.” And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward the other vir­gins came also, saying, “Lord, Lord, open to us.” But he answered and said, “Verily I say unto you, I do not know you.” Watch therefore, for you know nei­ther the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

THE FIRST ODE

An Ode of Moses in the Exodus.

Exodus 15: 1-19

When he had drowned Pharao in the deep, Moses said, Let us

sing unto the Lord, for He is gloriously glorified.

Let us sing unto the Lord, for He is gloriously glorified; the

horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea.

He was to me a helper and protector for salvation. He is my

God, and I will glorify Him; my father's God, and I will exalt Him.

The Lord bringing wars to nought; the Lord is His name.

Pharao's chariots and his hosts hath He cast into the sea; the

chosen mounted captains hath He plunged into the Red Sea.

He covered them with the sea; they sank into the depths as a

stone.

Thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorified in power; Thy

right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy; and in the

greatness of Thy glory hast Thou overthrown them that rose up

against Thee.

Thou sentest forth Thy wrath; it consumed them as stubble.

And with the breath of Thine anger the waters parted

asunder; the waters were congealed as a wall, the waves were

congealed in the midst of the sea.

The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the

spoil, I will satisfy my soul, I will destroy with my sword; my right

as lead in the mighty water.

Who is like unto Thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like

Thee, glorious in holiness, marvellous in glories, doing wonders?

Thou stretchedst out Thy right hand; the earth swallowed

them.

Thou in Thy righteousness hast guided this Thy people which

Thou hast redeemed; Thou calledst them in Thy strength unto Thy

holy habitation.

The heathen heard, and were angry; pangs took hold upon

the inhabitants of Philistia.

Then the princes of Edom made haste, the princes also of the

Moabites; trembling took hold upon them; all the inhabitants of

Chanaan melted away.

Let fear and trembling fall upon them; by the greatness of

Thine arm let them become as stone,

Till Thy people pass over, O Lord; till they pass over, this

people, which Thou hast purchased.

Bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of Thine

inheritance; in the place, O Lord, which Thou hast made for Thee

to dwell in, in the sanctuary which Thy hands have established.

The Lord reigning for ever and ever.

For the horse of Pharao went in with his chariots and with his

horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought again the waters of

the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry ground

in the midst of the sea.

Jer. 31, 10-14

HEAR the word of the Lord, O ye nations, and declare it in the islands that are afar off,

And say: He that scattered Israel will gather him: and he will keep him as the shepherd dothhis flock.

For the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and delivered him out of the hand of one that was mightier than he.

And they shall come, and shall give praise in mount Sion: and they shall flow together to the good things of the Lord,

THE FIFTH ODE


A prayer of Isaias the Prophet.

Is. 26: 9-21

(Isaias' prophecy, which is also his prayer.)

O Lord our God, grant us peace. Out of the night my spirit waketh at dawn unto Thee, O God; for Thy commandments are a light upon the earth. Learn righteousness, all ye that dwell upon the earth. For the ungodly man hath come to an end; every one that learneth not righteousness upon the earth shall not be able to do truth; let the ungodly be taken away, that he may not see the glory of the Lord. O Lord, Thine arm is lifted up, and they knew it not; but when they know it, let them be put to shame. Zeal shall lay hold upon an untaught people, and now fire shall devour the adversaries. O Lord our God, bestow Thy peace upon us, for Thou hast given all things unto us. O Lord our God, take us for Thy possession. O Lord, we know no other beside Thee; we call upon Thy name. But the dead shall not see life, neither shall physicians raise them up; therefore hast Thou brought wrath upon them, and hast slain them, and hast takenevery man of them away. We shall not fail, but all those that dwell upon the earth shall fail. The dead shall arise, and they that are in the tomb shall awake, and they that are upon the earth shall rejoice. For the dew which Thou sendest is healing unto them; but the land of the ungodly shall perish. Go, my people, enter into thine inner chamber, shut thy door, hide thyself for a little season, until the anger of the Lord shall pass away.

Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke within him­self, saying “This man, if He were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is who touch Him: for she is a sinner.” And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he said, “Master, say it.” “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he freely forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him more?” Simon answered and said, “I suppose­ that he, to whom he forgave more.” And He said unto him, “You have rightly judged.” And He turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered into your house, you gave Me no water for My feet: but she has washed My feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. You gave Me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in has not ceased to kiss My feet. My head with oil you did not anoint: but this woman has anointed My feet with ointment. Therefore I say unto you, `Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.” And He said unto her, “Your sins are forgiven.” And they who sat to eat with Him began to say within themselves, “Who is this who forgives sins also?” And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness did not comprehend it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not the Light, but was sent to bear witness to the Light. That was the true Light that gives light to every man coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world did not know Him. He came unto His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt in us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the Only-Begotten of His Father, full of grace and truth. John bore witness of Him, and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, `He who comes after me is preferred before me: for He was before me.’ ” And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

the midst of the sea, and who didst open unto the three wise men, by the guiding of a Star, the way that lead unto Thee, grant to us good speed, and quietness: may thy All holy Angel of Almighty Counsel Captain of the hosts of the Lord, Jesus Christ thou Most Holy Lord God Pantocrator in the flesh, with St. Michael and St. Gabriel and all your elect angels accompany us during our pilgrimage going forth before us and delivering us in everything everywhere in every detail prevented and preventing and in the end, may we attain the haven of eternal salvation.

O God, who didst call thy servant Abraham, out of Ur of the Chaldees, and didst keep him from evil through all the ways of his pilgrimage, we beseech Thee, that it please Thee to keep us Thy servants. Be Thou unto us, O Lord, a help when we go forward, a comfort by the way, a shadow from the heat, our covering from the rain and the cold, a chariot is weariness, when we are weary, a refuge in trouble, a staff in slippery paths, a haven in shipwreck. It is good to give praise unto the Lord, and chant unto Thy name, O Most High, To proclaim in the morning Thy mercy, and Thy truth by night, on a psaltery of ten strings, with an ode upon the harp. For Thou hast gladdened me, O Lord, by Thy deeds, and in the works of Thy hands will I rejoice. How great are Thy works, O Lord, exceeding deep are Thy thoughts. A mindless man shall not know it, nor shall a stupid man understand it. When the sinners spring up like grass, and all that work iniquity look loftily down, It is that they may be utterly destroyed unto ages of ages; but Thou art Most High for ever, O Lord. For lo, Thine enemies, O Lord, for lo, Thine enemies shall perish; and scattered shall be all they that work iniquity. I am smitten like grass, and withered is my heart, for I forgot to eat my bread. By reason of the voice of my groaning, my bone hath cleaved unto my flesh. For there is none holy as the Lord, for there is none that is

righteous as our God, and there is none holy beside Thee.

Boast not, and utter not proud things, let not arrogance come

out of Thy mouth.

For the Lord is a God of knowledge, and a God that prepareth

His own ways.

The bow of the mighty hath waxed feeble, and the weak have

hath understanding, and knoweth the Lord; and that He worketh

And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated, His disciples came to Him. And He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are you, when they revile you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Who is in heaven.”

A Psalm of David, 22.

The Lord is my shepherd, and I shall not want. In a place of green pasture, there hath He made me to dwell; beside the water of rest hath He nurtured me. He hath converted my soul, He hath led me on the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. For though I should walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they have comforted me. Thou hast prepared a table for me in the presence of them that afflict me. Thou hast anointed my head with oil, and Thy cup which filleth me, how excellent it is! And Thy mercy shall pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord unto length of days.

Lord Jesus Christ Who took upon You the curses of the peoples as related in the psalms to bring us back to Your true Law written in our hearts by You and preached by You first of all and the prophets, especially St. John the Baptist, Lord Jesus Christ Who commands us to obey Your Law and nothing other, have mercy upon us who turn to You. Grant us to always be aware of the pitfalls related in the psalms to always avoid these ditches. All Holy Divine Person Lord Jesus Christ Immortal Son Word Wisdom Power of God Our Father in the Unity and Power and Bond of Love of the Holy Spirit our Paraclete. Grant us to worthily receive this Communion which You alone give to us. You Who with the Father and the Holy Spirit created the world ex nihilo at the beginning of the first six days and finished the making thereof on the rest of the first six days and on the morn of the last of those formed Adam from the moist earth and breathed into him and he became a living soul and cast him into a deep sleep and made Eve from his side; the first man and woman with none other before them of any sort and none other with them at the beginning of any sort, from whom are descended all men here on earth wherein all salvation is worked out from the first Adam to the last saint, saved by You and no other, for no other could. Thy hands have made me and fashioned me; give me understanding and I will learn Thy commandments. They that fear Thee shall see me and be glad, for on Thy words have I set my hope. I have known, O Lord, that Thy judgements are righteousness, and with truth hast Thou humbled me. Let now Thy mercy be my comfort, according to Thy saying unto Thy servant. Let Thy compassions come upon me and I shall live, for Thy law is my meditation. Let the proud be put to shame, for unjustly have they transgressed against me; but as for me, I will ponder on Thy commandments. Middle

I am Thine, save me; for after Thy statutes have I sought. Sinners have waited for me to destroy me; but Thy testimonies have I understood. Of all perfection have I seen the outcome; exceeding spacious is Thy commandment. O how I have loved Thy law, O Lord! the whole day long it is my meditation. Above mine enemies hast Thou made me wise in Thy commandment, for it is mine for ever. Above all that teach me have I gained understanding, for Thy testimonies are my meditation. Above mine elders have I received understanding, for after Thy commandments have I sought. From every way that is evil have I restrained my feet that I might keep Thy words. From Thy judgements have I not declined, for Thou hast set a law for me. How sweet to my palate are Thy sayings! more sweet than honey to my mouth. From Thy commandments have I gained understanding; therefore have I hated every way of unrighteousness. Thy law is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my paths. I have sworn and resolved that I will keep the judgements of Thy righteousness. I was humbled exceedingly; O Lord, quicken me according to Thy word. The free-will offerings of my mouth be Thou now pleased to receive, O Lord, and teach me Thy judgements. My soul is in Thy hands continually, and Thy law have I not forgotten. Sinners have set a snare for me, yet from Thy commandment have I not strayed. I have inherited Thy testimonies for ever, for they are the rejoicing of my heart. I have inclined my heart to perform Thy statutes for ever for a recompense. Transgressors have I hated, but Thy law have I loved. My helper and my protector art Thou; on Thy words have I set my hope. Depart from me, ye evil-doers, and I will search out the commandments of my God. Uphold me according to Thy saying and quicken me, and turn me not away in shame from mine expectation. Help me, and I shall be saved; and I will meditate on Thy statutes continually. Thou hast set at nought all that depart from Thy statutes, for unrighteous is their inward thought. I have reckoned as transgressors all the sinners of the earth, therefore have I loved Thy testimonies. Nail down my flesh with the fear of Thee, for of Thy judgements am I afraid. I have wrought judgement and righteousness; O give me not up to them that wrong me. Receive Thy servant unto good, let not the proud falsely accuse me. Mine eyes have failed with waiting for Thy salvation, and for the word of Thy righteousness. Deal with Thy servant according to Thy mercy, and teach me Thy statutes. I am Thy servant; give me understanding, and I shall know Thy testimonies. It is time for the Lord to act; for they have dispersed Thy law. Therefore have I loved Thy commandments more than gold and topaz. Therefore I directed myself according to all Thy commandments; every way that is unrighteous have I hated. Wonderful are Thy testimonies; therefore hath my soul searched them out. The unfolding of Thy words will give light and understanding unto babes. Look upon me and have mercy on me, according to the judgement of them that love Thy name. My steps do Thou direct according to Thy saying, and let no iniquity have dominion over me. Exodus 15: 1-19

When he had drowned Pharao in the deep, Moses said, Let us

sing unto the Lord, for He is gloriously glorified.

Let us sing unto the Lord, for He is gloriously glorified; the

horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea.

He was to me a helper and protector for salvation. He is my

God, and I will glorify Him; my father's God, and I will exalt Him.

The Lord bringing wars to nought; the Lord is His name.

Pharao's chariots and his hosts hath He cast into the sea; the

chosen mounted captains hath He plunged into the

Red Sea.

He covered them with the sea; they sank into the depths as a

stone.

Thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorified in power; Thy

right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy; and in the

greatness of Thy glory hast Thou overthrown them that rose up

against Thee.

Thou sentest forth Thy wrath; it consumed them as stubble.

And with the breath of Thine anger the waters parted

asunder; the waters were congealed as a wall, the waves were

congealed in the midst of the sea.

The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the

spoil, I will satisfy my soul, I will destroy with my sword; my right

hand shall have the dominion.

Thou sentest forth Thy wind, the sea covered them; they sank

as lead in the mighty water.

Who is like unto Thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like

Thee, glorious in holiness, marvellous in glories, doing wonders?

Thou stretchedst out Thy right hand; the earth swallowed

them.

Thou in Thy righteousness hast guided this Thy people which

Thou hast redeemed; Thou calledst them in Thy strength unto Thy

holy habitation.

The heathen heard, and were angry; pangs took hold upon

the inhabitants of Philistia.

Then the princes of Edom made haste, the princes also of the

Moabites; trembling took hold upon them; all the inhabitants of

Chanaan melted away.

Let fear and trembling fall upon them; by the greatness of

Thine arm let them become as stone,

Till Thy people pass over, O Lord; till they pass over, this

people, which Thou hast purchased.

Bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of Thine

inheritance; in the place, O Lord, which Thou hast made for Thee

to dwell in, in the sanctuary which Thy hands have established.

The Lord reigning for ever and ever.

For the horse of Pharao went in with his chariots and with his

horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought again the waters of

the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry ground

in the midst of the sea.

HEAR the word of the Lord, O ye nations, and declare it in the islands that are afar off,

And when the day began to wear away, the twelve came, and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get provisions: for we are here in a deserted place.”

But He said unto them, “You give them to eat.” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish; unless we go and buy food for all these people.” For they were about five thousand men. And He said to His disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of fifty.” And they did so, and made them all sit down.

Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude. And they ate, and were all filled, and twelve baskets of the remaining fragments were taken by them.

Declare, O Avvacum, the Word's kenosis. Glory be to Thy power,

O Lord, I have heard Thy report, and was afraid; O Lord, I

considered Thy works, and was amazed.

Between the two living creatures shalt Thou be known; when

the years draw nigh, Thou shalt be acknowledged; when the

season cometh, Thou shalt be shown forth; when my soul is

troubled, in Thine anger shalt Thou remember mercy.

God shall come from Theman, and the Holy One from the

shady and densely wooded mountain.

With threatening shalt Thou bring low the earth, and in anger

Thou wentest forth for the salvation of Thy people, Thou art

come to save Thine anointed ones. Thou didst bring death upon

the heads of the transgressors, Thou didst bring bands upon their

neck.

Thou didst cut asunder the heads of the mighty with fury;

they shall tremble in themselves, they shall burst their bridles, as

the poor man devouring in secret.

And Thou hast mounted upon Thine horses in the sea, and

they trouble the many waters.

I kept watch, and my belly was troubled, at the voice of the

prayer of my lips; and trembling entered into my bones, and my

of first-fruits before Thee, that we may obtain mercy.

Nevertheless, in a contrite soul and an humble spirit let us be

Like as in the burnt offerings of rams and bullocks, and like

as ten thousands of fat lambs, so let our sacrifice this day be

acceptable in Thy sight; and hereafter let it be performed before

Thee; for there is no shame to them that put their trust in Thee.

Lord, God almighty, Jesus Christ, who came to call not the just but sinners to repentance, in fulfilment of your promise you have graciously said: In the moment that the sinner repents of his fault, I forget his sin.

Accept my repentance in this hour of pain, and by means of this fire prepared for my body, set me free from the eternal fire that would burn both soul and body.

I thank you, Lord Jesus Christ, for having accepted me as a holocaust to your name. I thank you for having offered yourself on the cross as a victim for the whole world; you, the just for the unjust; the good for the evil; you, the innocent, a victim for sinners.

I offer my sacrifice to you, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit, live and reign, God, for ever and ever. Amen!

Let no creature, visible or invisible, attract me, so that I may belong to Jesus Christ alone.
Fire and the cross; herds of wild beasts; torn, stretched, rent, lacerated limbs; dislocated bones; crushed body; and all the tremendous torments of the devil let them all come upon me if only I can rest in Jesus Christ.
All the kingdoms of this world and the joy of them are nothing to me. I prefer to die in Christ than to reign from one end of the earth to the other.
I seek him who died for us; I long for him who rose again for our sakes.
Be good to me, my brothers; do not impede my birth into life, do not kill me [by preventing me from dying for Christ], do not give to the world one who desires to belong only to God. Allow me to turn to that pure light: when I arrive there [in the arena] I will be a man of God indeed.

He was not nailed but bound. And bound thus, with his hands behind his back, he seemed like a lamb chosen from the flock for the sacrifice, prepared as a holocaust pleasing to God; and raising his eyes to heaven he said:

Lord, God almighty, Father of Jesus Christ, your blessed and beloved Son who has taught us to know you.

God of the angels, of the whole of creation, of the whole race of the just who live in your presence: I bless you because you have judged me worthy of this day and of this hour; worthy to be added to the number of the martyrs; worthy to drink the chalice of your Christ, so as to rise up to eternal life in body and soul in the immortality of the Holy Spirit.

May I today be numbered among the martyrs in your presence as a precious and acceptable victim; bring to completion that which your will has prepared and revealed to me; God, faithful and true, for this grace and for all the others, I praise you, I glorify you, and bless you through our eternal heavenly priest, your beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
